EB3 Specimen Answer Who is your favourite singer/band and why do you like that singer/band?
I tend to listen to classical rock/pop, especially from the 1960s to the 1990s. The common element is that in my opinion the bands can play their instruments extremely well and they are not ‘manufactured’ bands which has become increasingly prevalent with the various talent programmes. Also, the singers have good voices and can sing properly. I like to listen to the words of the lyrics and to also think about what the lyrics mean and how they can be interpreted.
Thus, at the softer/quieter end of my musical tastes are Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, and Neil Young. More rock oriented bands would include Pink Floyd, Rainbow, Magnum, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and AOR bands such as Foreigner, Journey, Kansas and REO Speedwagon. Whilst at the hard rock/heavy metal end of the spectrum Dio, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, and The Scorpions are bands which stand out.
As a student I also listened to these bands and went to many concerts. When I left university and I entered the world of work I was able to buy more CDs. As the years go by I find that whilst I will check out new bands it is the music of the 1960s to the 1990s that I return to, and finding rare tracks or live recordings.
If I had to pick one band as a favourite then it would probably have to be Pink Floyd. Whilst the band members have had a tempestuous relationship and an extremely acrimonious falling out which resulted in protracted and expensive litigation Pink Floyd arguably stands ahead of other bands. Their lyrics are witty, intelligent, funny, sad and they make me think about lots of different themes and issues. Moreover, in ‘The Wall’ and also ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ they have two of the most commercially and critically acclaimed albums of all time.
Reading List for the Methodological Issues in Research – Qualitative Research
In the comments/hints on the previous page I have given suggestions of which particular parts of Saunders et al. (2009) can be used. Below I have enclosed the reading list with some additional comments.
The best research methods book which I have found and recommend is:
More specifically the following chapters from Saunders et al. (2009) are core reading:
Chapter 9, Collecting primary data through observation.
Chapter 10, Collecting primary data using semi-structured, in-depth and group interviews.
Chapter 13, Analysing qualitative data.
Some of the other chapters in Saunders et al. (2009) such as chapter 2 can also be drawn upon for this module, and are used more extensively for other modules on the course.
A second good book which I would recommend is the following:
Part 3 of Bryman and Bell (2007) Chapters 16 to 23 covers qualitative research extensively.
Some of the other chapter in Bryman and Bell (2007) such as chapter 2 and 3 can also be drawn upon for this module, and they will be re-visited in a subsequent module. These two sources are the best written books which I have found and additionally they are both up-to-date. Both are available in paperback.
There are many other books which could be used. Below are some further alternatives. However, if you have bought or borrowed a copy of Saunders et al. (2009) and Bryman and Bell (2007) then there is arguably a limited benefit from buying any further research methods books for the coverage of qualitative research.
The second edition from 1984 is also fine.
The following source goes into great detail on qualitative research and is a more advanced book.
ビジネス系でお勧めなのはThe Times, The Economist, Financia Times, New York Times, Washington Postなどの新聞。有料じゃないと読めないものもあるけども、日本の新聞と比べたら内容充実しているし安いしで、有償でも読む価値あり。毎日毎日読めば英語力もつくし、海外情報にも詳しくなるのでグー。

モジュール1:Qualitative Research Methods
1. You have been appointed as a Researcher to the Marketing Department of a company which is seeking to expand its markets overseas. This can be a manufacturing or a service sector business. The Head of the Marketing Department has asked you to undertake a plan of the qualitative research which needs be undertaken to assess the markets overseas. You need to provide a report for your manager which outlines the following: (a) The plan of your overall strategy and objectives of what you are trying to achieve. (b) Indicate which types of Qualitative Research are you recommending, and which ones you feel are not appropriate. This should include the strengths and weaknesses of each type of qualitative research. (c) Indicate how many people you feel need to take part in the qualitative research to achieve good quality results. (d) Outline any potential problems which you think could happen in undertaking the qualitative research. (e) Provide contingency plans of how you will address any potential problems. (d) A provisional timetable for the undertaking of the qualitative research. (f) Remember to include an Executive Summary and put that at the front of the assignment answer.
Your report should be no more than 1,350 words in length. Your document needs to include an Executive Summary of up to 350 words. Feel free to contextualize your answer to any industry/company which you are interested in – manufacturing and/or services. Similarly you could apply this to a real company or an imaginary company.
Deadlines: You can submit an interim version of your report at any time. You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your interim report.
After you have received the comments upon the interim version of your report you can then undertake more work to improve and develop your answer. You can submit the final version of your report at any time. You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your final report.
Your Mother owns and runs the family bakery business and she has asked for your help in performing some quantitative research to help her to decide upon the new business strategy. Your Mother is in good health and she is not thinking of retiring for many years. The business was originally started by your Mother’s Grandfather in 1915 as a bakery producer and seller in central Tokyo.
The business was later expanded by your Mother’s Father (your Grandfather) after the Second World War and the number of bakery outlets increased to 15 in central and outer Tokyo. This expansion included a broadening of activities to also include the manufacturing and retailing of sweets/candy items (i.e. more chocolate based products).
20 years ago your Mother expanded the number of outlets to 25. The business owns the buildings and the land where they produce and also sell the products. Some of the land is mortgaged.
The business now manufacturers and sells a wide range of food related products, and in all of the outlets there are also cafes where people can eat on the premises and have drinks such as tea or coffee. The business employs a total of 450 people (including two cousins and two Uncles) and still makes a profit, but this is now much smaller than in the past.
10 of the outlets are booming and could expand, 10 of the outlets are doing OK and make a small profit, and 5 of the outlets are making huge losses. Assume that your Mother owns 70% of the business and each of her two brothers owns 15% of the business.
Tasks: Provide a report for your Mother upon the quantitative research which needs to be done to help her to decide upon the new strategy of the business.
This report should be no more than 1,350 words +/- 10% in length. Your document needs to include an Executive Summary of up to 350 words +/- 10% in length.
The report needs to include information upon the following:
1. The plan of what the research objectives are going to be and how these will help your Mother’s business strategy.
2. Indicate which types of quantitative research you are going to recommend, and which ones are appropriate and which are inappropriate. In other words, include the strengths and weaknesses of the types of quantitative research which can be undertaken.
3. Explain in simple terms how many people need to take part in the quantitative research, and how you would identify/target the people to take part in the research.
4. Think about and explain the problems which you may encounter when you were doing the research.
5. How would you cope with these problems, and how could they be overcome?
6. Provide a timetable for undertaking the quantitative research.
For each of the points (a) to (f) the Professor will provide more detailed suggestions and link these to the reading list sources when you have subscribed to the module.
A reading list and slides will also be provided to the subscribers of the module.
Submission of the Report.
You are a junior manager in a business. Your boss, a senior manager wants tocommission a piece of research on understanding what consumers think about particular aspects of the products or services which your company provides. You are to provide a report advising your boss on all of the ethical considerations which need to be thought about and implemented at the (a) design, (b) data collection and analysis, (c) writing-up, and (d) dissemination stages of the research. Also (e) provide a check list of questions which need to be answered in relation to the research.
In answering points (a) to (e) you need to make the points in relation to a specific project with regard to the company. In other words you need to make up or imagine a scenario. The company can be a real one, perhaps a company you work for, or equally a company which you do not work for. Similarly, the nature of the product or service can be for real ones, or ones which you have made up. You also need to include a short Executive Summary at the start of your report.
Professor Comments/Hints:
You first of all need to think of what is the overall purpose of the research which is going to be undertaken. In other words, put yourself in the shoes of a junior manager of a company, real or imagined, and decide which sector is the company in? What does the company make or do? Following on from that what are the pieces of information which you want the research to reveal about consumer views and preferences? You have been given the choice and the flexibility over the choice of company and exact research questions so that you can apply it to a business or company which you are interested in.
Once you have decided on the objectives of the research, and the company and industry you then need to think about what are the ethical considerations which need to be thought about with regard to (a) the design of the project, (b) the data collection and analysis of the project, (c) the writing up of the research findings, and (d) the dissemination of the research findings within the business.
In addition in the last main part of the question you are asked to draw up a list of questions which need to be asked about ethical issues and considerations when undertaking a research project. For maximum value and benefits for your boss youneed to then apply those questions to the scenario which you have decided.
Submission of the Report
Your report should be no more than 1,350 words in length. Your document needs to include an Executive Summary of up to 350 words. Feel free to contextualize your answer to ANY industry or company which you are interested in – manufacturing and/or services. Similarly you can apply this to a real company or an imaginary
A deadline will be listed. You can then submit an interim or draft version of your report at any time up to this first deadline. But, in practice I am flexible over this deadline, so don’t worry if you are a bit late. Similarly, don’t worry if the report is alittle rough. You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your interim or draft report.
After you have received comments upon the interim or draft version of the report you can then undertake more work to improve and develop your answer. The deadline for the final version of the report will be listed. You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your final report.
Reading List for the Ethics in Research Topic
In the comments/hints on the previous page I have given suggestions of which
particular parts of Saunders et al. (2009) can be used. Below I have enclosed the reading list with some additional comments.
The best research methods book which I have found and I would recommend is:
Saunders, M., Lewis, P., and A. Thornhill (2009) Research Methods for business students (5th edition). Harlow: Pearson. ISBN: 978-0-273-71686-0.
More specifically the following chapter from Saunders et al. (2009) is core reading:
Chapter 6, Negotiating access and research ethics
Some of the other chapters in Saunders et al. (2009) such as chapter 2 can also be
drawn upon for this module, and are used more extensively for other modules on the A second good book which I would recommend is the following:
Bryman, A. and E. Bell (2007) Business research methods (2nd edition). Oxford:
Oxford University Press. ISBN: 978-0-19-928498-6
More specifically the following chapter from Bryman and Bell (2007) is core reading:
Chapter 5 Ethics in business research
The Economic and Social Research Council’s (ESRC) most up-to-date Framework for Research Ethics is excellent and it is free to download. http://www.esrc.ac.uk/
The document is 50 pages long and you don’t need to read it all, but the following pages and sections are well worth reading. Moreover, this document can be easily downloaded for free!
Pages 26-32 covers Frequently Asked Questions such as Assessing Risk, Consent, Medical Research, Internet Research.
Very helpfully, Pages 33 and 34 provide a very good check list for you to think about and apply to your research which you are doing.
Pages 41-42 provides an excellent list of web addresses of Professional ethics codes and links to relevant legislation.
Page 43 offers excellent links to Professional Associations.
Pages 47-50 provides excellent case studies and illustrative examples.
The following document from The Suzy Lamplugh Trust is well worth reading, and
In 1986 Suzy Lamplugh, a 25 year old estate agent tragically disappeared after she went to meet an unknown client. To this day her body has not been found. Accordingly, she has been presumed to have been murdered and she has been declared dead. Applying the good principles of ‘working alone’ to the research data gathering process is ethically very responsible.
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 is an important piece of UK Government legislation and as the name suggests it covers access to information held by public authorities. You do not need to spend very much time on this source, but it is presented so that you are aware of some of the important issues. The best source is the following website:
~/media/publications/F/file41318 By looking at this you will see that there are many
areas of overlap between science and the social sciences and business research.
For your assignment to accompany this module the Saunders et al. (2009) and
Bryman and Bell (2007) books are the best, and should be supplemented with the
ESRC Framework document on ethics. Any additional reading is a bonus.
On page 203-204 of Saunders et al. (2009) they present a list of References and also Further Reading. Many of these sources are good ones, but I don’t see the merits in buying books beyond Saunders et al. (2009) and Bryman and Bell (2007).
モジュール4: Undertaking a Review of the Literature
For this assignment you have a choice over which question you answer – question 1 OR question 2. For question 1 you need to answer the following.
(1a) What are the features and elements which should be covered in a good critical literature review? Provide examples to illustrate your points. (1b) What are the features and elements which should be avoided in writing a good critical literature review? Provide examples to illustrate your points.
OR
As an alternative answer the following question.
(2) Write a critical review on the following articles which are available on the BBC news website and The NewYork Times website.
(a) ‘Tepco faces shareholder wrath following nuclear crisis’ which appeared on 28th June on the BBC news website.
(c) ‘Japan's factory output rebounds as conditions improve’ which appeared on 29th June on the BBC news website.
(d) ‘Japan's Chubu Electric gets 100bn yen emergency loan’ which appeared on 24th June on the BBC news website.
Whether you answer question 1 OR question 2 your report should be no more than 1,350 words in length. Your document needs to include an Executive Summary of up to 350 words.
Deadlines:
There are no deadlines as such for you to meet. Indeed, you can submit an interim version of your report at any time which you feel that you have taken the answer as far as you can, and you need some help and input in taking this forward.
I appreciate that you will have a busy life with many responsibilities and demands upon your time and that you need to be given the total flexibility over when you can hand in the assignment answer. You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your interim report.
After you have received the comments upon the interim version of your report you can then undertake more work to improve and develop your answer. There is no deadline for the final version of the report. When you feel that you have done your best to address the points and comments from the interim version send the final version to the Professor.
You will receive back comments from the Professor within 10 working days of receipt of your final report. The comments in the interim and the final version of the assignment will be made in track change.

Some points for us all from the first assignment.
We assume that we do not know the names of the neighbours. Thus, it is best to start the invitation with ‘Dear Neighbours’.
Once you have been introduced to the neighbours you will be on first name/Christian name terms and all future letters will involve you using them. Thus, if the neighbours are called Tom and Sally Smith a future letter would simply begin, ‘Dear Tom and Sally’.
The neighbourhood is the place/location where you live. The people who live there are called your neighbours.
‘Neighbours’ is the English spelling and ‘neighbors’ is the American spelling. There are a lot of words which differ according to English or American spelling and over the course we will introduce you to a lot more examples.
In ending this invitation you can opt for a few types of endings. One possibility is to use ‘Kind Regards’. This is also an ending which can be used to end emails to friends and family and also business emails as well. That is a very useful ending.
You could also use the expression ‘Best Regards’ as well, but ‘Kind Regards’ works better. The word ‘Best’ is usually combined with ‘Best Wishes’ and is a greeting included to end many Birthday cards in England.
In the invitation the tea party will be taking place in your garden. In America the back garden is called a ‘yard’, or a ‘back yard’. The majority of houses in England have gardens. Gardens are usually larger in the suburbs of towns and cities, and gardens are larger away from towns and cities.
In the assignments there are obviously going to be ones which are fiction, and require the use of the imagination.
In this assignment there was a need to come up with some fictional names for all six members of the family. There is also a need to come up with a little information about each person – for the children, how old are each of them, and where are they originally from?
In this type of assignment you need to indicate a fictional place where the family lives, so that the neighbours know where the tea party is going to take place.
